From the dream

From what haunted me

I was falling in deep to the life I dreamed
With people telling me I was all that
Drunk on the press and the praise I received
I started believing the act was no act
Cause they said, “Just shine like a star,”
But, “Just be who you are,”
And “Be this” and “Be that
And you’ll go far”
But just when it seemed like my big break had come
I’d find myself staring right back at square one
And it took me years to finally see
That the dream they sold me wasn’t my dream

From success
Set apart from birth, but not because of my own worth
I thought God was lucky to have me on his shirt
Full of my esteem, but running out of steam
I couldn’t see – my heart was so obscene
Full of lies, full of hate, because I thought I could make it
To the top of the ladder, and somehow still “faith it”
But you can’t hold hands with God and the world
And I’d say you have to choose, but there’s nothing you can do
Cause’ He called me out of darkness when I was blind
Shone the light of His truth into my fragile mind
Spoke the words, “It is finished!” and so he lit the spark
Freed me from the tyranny of trying to make my mark
Cause’ I’ve been saved

From success
Now I spill the cup of fame
Now I leap with the rest of the lame
Now I feast at the supper of the lamb
Now I look to the promised land
Because He’s made me completely new
Born of the Spirit, not just the womb
Because He’s washed away all my shame
And clothed me with his perfect name
So when I die, I won’t be afraid
I’ll be confident, standing at the gates
Saying, “I did nothing to deserve to enter in,
But I know I can, because you took my sin!”
